The original photograph, entitled "Pickets Walk in Protest at Negro School," appeared in the Portsmouth Daily Times on 5 September 1962, and marks a critical turning point in the integration of the Booker T. Washington School in Portsmouth, Ohio. The newspaper image has been superimposed upon a more recent photograph of the school, which was taken by Andrew Feight, Ph.D.
