Julia Marlowe (1865-1950), formerly Fanny Brough, spent her childhood in the Boneyfiddle district of Portsmouth, Ohio, where she lived with her mother Madame Brough, the keeper of a saloon and brothel. In the 1880s Marlowe became a world famous Shakespearean actress and supporter of women’s voting rights.
