Julia Marlowe at 13, When She Lived in Portsmouth, Ohio

The earliest known photographic portrait of Julia Marlowe, which reportedly dates to the time she lived in Portsmouth, Ohio. The original caption of the image comes from Henry A. Lorberg, a local city booster, who published post cards with this image in the early twentieth-century, at the height of Marlowe's fame. This copy of the portrait was pasted into Lorberg's personal Scrapbook, Volume 6. Biographers are in general agreement that Julia Marlowe was born in the village of Caldack, Cumberlandshire, England in 1865. If Marlowe (known as Fanny Brough when she lived in Portsmouth) is truly thirteen years old in this portrait, the original image dates to 1879, the year she and her mother, "Madame Brough," moved to Cincinnati. It was there that a thirteen-year old Fanny Brough was first cast in a stage production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pinafore.
