Robert Dafford’s flood wall mural is captioned, “The Legendary Jim Thorpe was a player-coach for the Portsmouth Shoe-Steels in 1927.” Thorpe and Portsmouth High School football star Jack Creasy put together the Shoe-Steels from local talent and experienced professionals. With Labold Field and the houses of Williams Street in the background, Dafford depicted the team posing for their team photograph in the fall of 1927.
