Edward W. Peet served as the minister of St. Paul's Church (1833-1841) and lent his support to the Chillicothe Colonization Society. On 20 November 1836, Peet and St. Paul's hosted the annual meeting of the Society, which issued resolutions calling on area residents to petition Congress on behalf of gradual emancipation and the removal of the free black population to Liberia on the west coast of Africa.
